They’re all at once personal vignettes and universal truths of life in the 2010s, the lines blurred between Slocum’s own experiences and those of his friends and acquaintances. With ‘ Brave Faces Etc”, the songs are character stories set in small-town America and anxious urban jungles alike, unfurling heartbreaking tales of addiction, depression, debt and death juxtaposed alongside looming societal issues like mass shootings, the opioid epidemic and climate change. That beautiful chaos has spawned something rather special & grown the band in new ways, highlighting steeped the same detail-rich storytelling of Bruce Springsteen, The Menzingers and Manchester Orchestra. The band spent months reimagining and re-tracking the entire album from the ground up while working completely remotely in 3 different home studios in 3 time zones. We definitely weren’t confident enough to try that the first time around, which is probably the case for a lot of the different things we tried to achieve on the reimagined. If the original song (and album really) was based on a wall of guitars, then this is meant to be the opposite, and is our attempting at making some big without it necessarily having to be loud or aggressive. “This version takes that approach and applies it to a song that was always built around a huge hook. “A lot of this album came about from working at home, and listening to a ton of ambient, loop based music.” says singer Dylan Slocum. The album features reimagined & alternative versions of the original 2020 release and today they share the beautiful new version of “Kick” 2' and “Running through jobs I’m gonna hate/Living paycheck to paycheck” from ' Brave Faces, Everyone' highlights the stark, crushing day-job reality for many.LA based quintet Spanish Love Songs have announced “Brave Faces Etc”, due out 15th April 2022. “What would it take to be happy?/I'll probably start with the money” is hopefully belted out on ' Optimism (As A Radical Life Choice)' “you know damn well there ain't a promised land/the cost of living means it costs to stay alive” is a crushing sentiment expressed by ' Losers, Pt. From “All I have are missed bank payments” and “But I can't eat off this paycheck” lifted off “ Self Destruction (As A Sensible Career Choice).” This is an album about disparity and in some ways, class-warfare blue-collar working punks just trying to get by. A major lyrical topic is debt and financial hardships, with many examples scattered throughout the record. They’re bleak, but they’re straight to the point and clearly convey the bands message. The beginning of that particular chorus references a “ bleak mind,” and that lyric is a perfect description of the lyricism to this album.
